Frequently asked questions
Where does this data come from?
FMCSA publishes its licensing & insurance and carrier census data on data.transportation.gov. We read it live and cache it for an hour. Filings can take a day or more to appear after an insurer submits them.
My insurance shows on file but my authority isn't active. Why?
Authority also requires a BOC-3 process-agent filing and completion of FMCSA's application review. If all filings are on record and it's still inactive, contact FMCSA.
What does 'liability required' mean?
It's the minimum bodily injury and property damage (BIPD) coverage FMCSA requires for that docket, based on what the carrier said it hauls. 'On file' is the amount the insurer has filed.
